I haven't posted on here in a little bit so I wanted to do a quick blog about some things from pop culture I've enjoyed the last few weeks.
TV Shows I've Been Into Lately:
I'm a sucker for a story about a creative person struggling to forge their path to success. Sure, the comedian-playing-a-comedian show has been done plenty of times before, but I'm also a sucker for that. Pete Holmes' Crashing is no exception. It's a joy to watch each week.
I feel like I learned the word "convoluted" just so I could accurately describe this show in one word. Though, hey, here are some more words: the plot is hard to follow at times and I don't necessarily feel a strong connection with any of the characters. BUT the visuals are wonderful and it's like getting to see a creative exercise played out on screen. Plus, I'm a big fan of any comic book treatment that isn't cliche or predictable. Legion is definitely neither of those things.
Oh, remember how Russian Spies infiltrating and influencing American political infrastructure was once quaint, enjoyable historical fiction? Yeah, that's unfortunately no longer the case, but this show, in its penultimate fifth season, is better than ever, offering a nice escape to the daily hellscape that is our national narrative.
The Americans currently holds the title belt for best show on the air right now. I expect it will until Fargo or Game of Thrones come back to challenge it.
Music I've Been Into Lately:
In the past week, Kendrick Lamar has released two new singles "The Heart Part 4" and "Humble." I'm really hoping that he will drop a new album soon, but even if he doesn't, these two songs are deep enough lyrically and musically to tide me over until he does.
On his new album, Care, David Bazan perfects the sound he has honed over the course of his last few releases. For me, it replaces The Postal Service's Give Back as the definitive electronic indie-pop album.
"Guardian" is the first single off Tigers Jaw's upcoming album Spin. The song is everything I love about Tigers Jaw packed easily into three and a half minutes. It's so catchy that I will probably listen to it over and over and over until Spin's May 19th release date.
Sorority Noise's new album You're Not As ___ As You Think is the first of their three albums to hit the mark with me. Frontman Cam Boucher crams so much emotion into their lyrics that it's easy to go back for repeated listens.
Books I've Been Into Lately:
I just finished this last week. It's worth every bit of the hype you have seen online. Read it.
I normally hate comic book reboots but the X-Men are the rare case where I feel it's justified. I've been waiting since Joss Whedon's Astonishing X-Men run for the comic to be good (or even decent) again. Judging from issue one, X-Men Prime is a step in the right direction.
Me Talk Pretty One Day by David Sedaris
Goodbye Days by Jeff Zentner
Next On My TBR Pile:
Bucky Fucking Dent by David Duchovny (Book Club Pick)
Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo
This is something we have been organizing with the staff of Rainbow Cafe since November of last year. I'm really looking forward to what will be a night of good music for a great cause.
On the writing side, I've been holding strong to a 1k-a-day word count goal for my current WIP. It was slow at first, but recently it has gained some real momentum. It may actually turn into something readable someday. Here's hoping.
I also have another author interview coming in April so be on the look out for that.
